Political cartoons haven’t been provocative in 40 years.

I don’t understand why Hispanics aren’t considered Native American, just because the Conquistadors taught them Spanish and Christianity.

Because most mestizos stopped identifying as native americans. There are still tribes in Mexico, though. There are even tribes whose territory spans across the US Mexico border and who have historically been allowed to go back and forth as they wish. The Tohono O’odham in southern Arizona is one such tribe. Some of their members have said they’re willing to fight in order to prevent a wall being put through their territory.

The Yaqui Indians also have roots in Mexico and the US. They fled persecution in Mexico and started their own town, Guadalupe, which is now in the middle of Phoenix. They still have lands in Mexico, though. They have to go back and forth across the border for various religious ceremonies.

Once you get into southern Mexico and central America, you do have quite a few people who identify as indigenous.

It’s only provacative if you have no clue as to the indigenous  makeup of central and south America. Otherwise it just seems ill informed.

I read it as more of a dig against Elizabeth Warren than anything else.

I got that part, but I guess I’m just confused about what they’re trying to say in regards to immigration.  There is a tribe that straddles the border, and they have lots of issues with BP letting them travel on their lands. Also, a good deal of migrants from central and south America do have indigenous roots.

I think you’re thinking too hard. I can’t see how this has anything to do with immigration. If it’s supposed to, then it’s a fail.

The border crossing, Border Patrol agent and pedestrian migrants with a kid immediately steer my mind towards immigration.

To me it looks like he’s making a statement about undocumented migrants trying to legitamize themselves in an illegitimate manner by using Warren’s ill advised techniques. Which would be funny, except that there are people who legitamately make the same claim, and are being hassled by BP for it.

I may, in fact, be thinking too much about it.

Members of the Tohono O’odham Nation in southern Arizona and northern Mexico   Have been going toe to toe with the feds for a while over this issue.
